The August Myth: Why “Everyone’s on Holiday” Could Be Costing You Business

Walk into any supermarket right now and you will see the season changing aisle by aisle.

Beach towels are reduced to clear while back-to-school pens and copybooks are stacked high nearby. The festivals are still in full swing, the fields are busy, and summer has not quite let go.

Yet in business circles, the same familiar story is already being repeated:

“Everyone is away.”

“Nothing gets decided in August.”

“We will pick it up again in September.”

I want to challenge that thinking because it has not been my experience. Not this year, and not throughout my years in sales.

July was one of the busiest months I have had, and August is shaping up to be just as active. Decisions are being made, contracts are being signed and valuable conversations are happening right now, while plenty of businesses have already convinced themselves that the world has gone quiet.

Here is what I believe is really happening.

Skeleton staff does not mean skeleton decisions

Yes, teams are lighter during August. Someone is on annual leave, someone else is covering two roles and the office may feel a little different.

However, the people who remain are often the decision-makers.

They may have fewer meetings filling their diaries, less internal noise and more time to properly consider the conversations, ideas and proposals in front of them.

That is not a dead period.

It is an opening.

Quiet on the surface does not mean quiet underneath

Inboxes may be lighter and phones may ring less often, but that surface calm can create the space where real thinking takes place.

The proposal that has been sitting in someone’s inbox since June finally gets read properly. The budget conversation that kept being postponed is revisited. The supplier, trainer or consultant they have been meaning to speak to finally gets a reply.

Fewer distractions can create better conversations.

The myth quickly becomes an excuse

When enough people believe that nothing happens in August, businesses begin acting as though it is true.

Sales calls are parked. Follow-ups are delayed until “after the summer”. Proposals remain unfinished and opportunities are left sitting.

That is exactly why the businesses that continue showing up can gain an advantage.

They are not necessarily working harder or pushing people to make decisions. They are simply remaining visible, available and engaged while others have stepped back.

Come September, they are not starting from scratch. They are continuing conversations that are already moving.

What I am seeing on the ground

Clients who kept their sales conversations moving throughout July are now progressing opportunities in August that others may have assumed would wait until the autumn.

They are not chasing people relentlessly or using pressure.

They are staying present, following up professionally and having conversations with purpose when the opportunity arises.

Sometimes the buyer is ready in August.

Sometimes the decision-maker has more time in August.

Sometimes the only reason the opportunity moves forward is because one business remained visible while everyone else went quiet.

The takeaway

Do not decide on behalf of your customer that they are too busy, away or unwilling to talk.

Let them tell you.

Keep the conversation open. Send the proposal. Make the follow-up call. Check in with the person who asked you to come back to them. Continue nurturing the relationships you have already started.

August is not a month to disappear.

It is a month to remain present, stay human and keep selling through conversation rather than assumption.

While everyone else is waiting for September, there may still be business to be done today.
